On the verge of 46!

Writer: Randy P. OrsoRandy P. Orso

Yes, we are on the verge of 46, the 46th President, and I am endorsing Biden-Harris, but this milestone tomorrow is my own verge of 46 years-old. I will have a birthday on the autumnal equinox. It is usually around the time kids return to school and the Summer vacations are over. The birthday is sometimes celebrated with pizza or a meal out with friends and close family members. During COVID-19 we have a more simple gathering planned.

As I reflect on having lived 46 years, I have seen a lot happen. I have seen gay marriage being accepted by a majority of Americans. I have seen Father James Martin, S.J., call for bridges to the LGBT community by the Catholic Church. I have seen gay presidential candidates, Mayor Pete Buttigieg and Fred Karger. I have lost loved ones, my dear Mother and my dear Johh T. Richardson, Jr., and my dear the Reverend Patrick Leuben Mukajanga. These losses have really hurt my soul, and I am not the person I was when they strengthened me with their support. I'll be retiring from ministry when I reach my 20th anniversary of ordination. I cannot do this mission without the support of the people who were always there for me. I have pressing private concerns to attend to and it is well past time that I focus on my own health and well-being.

I have enjoyed being a faith leader in the Universal Life Church Monastery movement and the Interfaith LGBTI Clergy Association. I appreciate the work I do with Saint Paul's Voice Centre of Uganda, and I look forward to taking more active roles in local mental health and political movements here in Pennsylvania. I have signed on to the Lincoln Project, The New Poor People's Campaign, Faith In Public Life, and other movements and I'll continue that activism but I will take a step back from my religious leadership of websites, forums, and so forth, to focus more on my private life. It is time for this radical minister to settle-down into a more quiet domesticity.

I will be 46, and at that age, I cannot easily put myself in harms way like before my "car accident".

I've stood against strip clubs, against gun rallies near schools, and against hate speech. I've put the concerns I have for the "beloved community" over my own private concerns. I've spoken out on all manner of injustices. The political climate as we enter that other verge of 46, the Presidential Elections, makes public protest and political activism more and more dangerous by the day. I have real concerns over the future of our republic when militia men are emboldened to harm peaceful protestors. This is of particular concern in the area of Wayne and Pike county where trucks with confederate flags were driven at protestors and the gun lobby holds a sway over some radical sects.

I don't much care to engage the public door to door in this kind of political climate. I don't have a place where I would discuss politics in public here, and I leave my activism to online support and petition and letter writing campaigns.

So on the verge of 46, the Presidency is in need of qualified and experienced diplomacy and leadership like the kind that Biden-Harris ticket can give our nation in crisis.

On the verge of 46 years of age, I find myself less interested in the zeal of political campaigns, but more in need of the calm and qualified leadership of experience and wisdom.

I'm voting Biden-Harris, and I ask you to join with me!
